Ambio has raised a €5.1 million Seed funding round. The Helsinki-based AI-native procurement service for recycled plastics will use the capital to scale internationally and across different polymer types.

The round was led by b2venture, with participation from Lifeline Ventures and Montis. The startup was founded in 2023 by Tommi Bergström and Elmo Pakkanen. Tommi Bergström serves as the CEO. The funding supports a clear goal: to make recycled plastics procurement as predictable as buying virgin polymers. Ambio aims to become the central, pan-European trust layer for the growing recyclates market.

Problem and solution

Procuring recycled plastics is a fragmented and manual process. It is difficult to scale. Polymers vary significantly in quality based on source, batch, and processing history. Data is often scattered or missing. Quality is frequently confirmed only at the production line, which is too late for reliable planning.

Industrial buyers want these materials to behave like other standard inputs. They demand consistent quality and reliable delivery with no surprises. Ambio argues that a verification infrastructure is needed to turn recycled plastics from a gamble into a reliably obtainable material at scale.

The company builds an AI-native end-to-end procurement solution. It covers the full cycle from material discovery to arranging long-term deliveries. Buyers inform Ambio of their required polymer type, specifications, quantity, and desired delivery date. The platform then matches the request with qualified suppliers and handles logistics.

Materials are qualified through samples, documentation, and defined quality protocols. Ambio’s matching engine learns from a growing dataset of transactions. Each transaction adds structured data on materials, suppliers, pricing, and outcomes. This dataset improves matching, quoting, and execution over time. The industry suffers from a lack of trust, according to CEO Tommi Bergström. Ambio’s solution creates predictability through verified materials, structured quality data, and one accountable partner.

Market context and traction

Customer demand for recycled plastics is rising. This is driven by sustainability goals, potential price advantages, and tightening regulatory requirements. Yet the market faces significant headwinds. Analysis from S&P Global expected nearly one million tonnes of European capacity to be lost between 2023 and the end of 2025. This is out of a total of 13.2 million tonnes from about 850 plants. The decline was attributed to cheap imports, regulatory barriers, and a widening price gap.

That price gap often leads buyers to choose virgin material. Regulation aims to eliminate it. Tommi Bergström believes regulation will generate demand for standardised, predictable quality. He does not believe regulation alone will be sufficient.

The global recycled plastics market is substantial. It was valued at $69.4 billion in 2023 and is forecast to reach $120.0 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 8.1%. This forecast was issued in April 2023.

Most venture capital investment has historically gone to the supply side of recycled plastics. Ambio concentrates on the demand side. Its greatest competition is the status quo of buying virgin plastic from oil. It also cites existing traders and distributors as competitors.

Ambio first launched in the Nordic countries and Germany. It began operating in France just two weeks ago. Its customers are mostly in the construction and packaging sectors. The startup must now prove that its direct sales model works and that repeat orders will follow.

Team and vision

The founding team emerged from the Slush startup community. Both Tommi Bergström and Elmo Pakkanen, who is the chief operating officer, joined Slush in the summer of 2019. Bergström later worked at Boston Consulting Group’s Helsinki office. In January 2022, they decided to become founders within a year. The concept for Ambio arose in late 2022, but the team has worked with customers in the space for three and a half years.

Mathias Ockenfels, a venture partner at lead investor b2venture, cited multiple reasons for backing the company. The firm is supporting Ambio due to the strength of the team, its proprietary dataset on recyclate quality, its principal model, and its agentic AI engine.

Future outlook

With the new capital, Ambio’s next aim is to enter more European markets. The company plans to scale its services internationally and across a wider range of polymer types. Every tonne of recycled plastic used in Europe stays within the European supply chain. This increases supply chain resilience and reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels for virgin plastics production. Ambio plans to use the capital to scale internationally and across polymer types.
