Elekta secures €100M EIB loan for research
Stockholm-based Elekta has secured a €100 million loan from the European Investment Bank to fund half of a €200 million research programme running from

Elekta has secured a loan of up to €100 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union’s financing arm. The financing will cover up to half of a roughly €200 million research programme the company plans to carry out between 2026 and 2029.
Karl Nehammer, Vice-President of the EIB, stated the bank's rationale. "Europe has world-leading medical-technology companies and we need to make sure they can continue investing and innovating here." he said. The loan falls under the EIB Group's TechEU programme, which is designed to strengthen European investment in strategic technologies and innovation, and it also feeds into EU objectives around health research, competitiveness and advanced medical technology.
Funding Strategic Innovation
The EIB loan provides capital for Elekta's long-term research strategy. Klara Eiritz, Elekta's Chief Financial Officer, explained the company's perspective. "As demand for cancer care continues to grow, healthcare providers are looking for solutions that help them treat more patients while maintaining quality and precision." she said.
Most of the research work funded by the loan will be based in Sweden and the Netherlands. The financing aligns with broader European Union objectives around health research, competitiveness, and advanced medical technology.
Elekta's Core Business and Scale
Founded in 1972 by Lars and Laurent Leksell, Elekta is a publicly traded company on Nasdaq Stockholm. It develops precision radiation medicine for treating various cancers, including brain tumours, breast cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer, as well as certain neurological disorders. The company's technology treats more than 2 million patients every year.
Elekta's solutions are built around adaptive radiotherapy, precision treatment delivery, and integrated clinical workflows. The company now employs around 4,000 people and operates offices in more than 40 countries, selling its products in over 120 markets worldwide.
Targeted Therapeutic Areas
The new financing will specifically back Elekta's work across several treatment modalities. These include radiotherapy, radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and the software platforms used to plan and deliver these therapies. The goal is to improve treatment for a wide range of conditions, including tumours in the brain and body, essential tremor and certain forms of epilepsy.
The company aims to make treatments more accurate and efficient. This effort supports healthcare providers facing growing demand for cancer care. The MedTech company aims to make treatments more accurate and efficient while enabling healthcare providers to treat a growing number of cancer patients.
European HealthTech Financing Context
The EIB's loan to Elekta is part of a broader pattern of health technology investment in Europe. In 2025 alone, the EIB Group signed €100 billion in new financing and advisory support across more than 870 projects tied to priorities such as climate action, digitalisation, security and defence, and social infrastructure.
