Startups.co.uk has launched a Business Toolkit to help small businesses get found online. The move responds to data showing many UK micro-businesses and sole traders lack a web presence or have inconsistent details across directories.
A UK Government survey found that 99% of large companies have a website. However, only 74% of micro-businesses and 65% of sole traders do. Many others have websites with outdated or conflicting information scattered online.
Why accurate information is everything
Inconsistent business information can be costly. One survey found 62% of consumers would avoid a business if they found incorrect information about it online. A wrong address or dead phone number is often enough for a customer to move on.
Google is the most trusted place people turn to check out a local business, used by 66% of consumers. This ranks ahead of Google Maps and business websites. Accuracy also affects search rankings. Keeping identical name, address, and phone details across the web, known as NAP consistency, is an important Google ranking factor. Mismatched details signal to Google that a business is not worth surfacing.
Being in the running
The most important search results are the small cluster of businesses shown at the top of the map. Earning a place there is the difference between being a first consideration and being buried on a second page. For a local business, that placement is valuable internet space. It is won through accurate listings, genuine reviews, and an up-to-date profile, not an advertising budget. You can review your own business's historical performance and market context in our stats section.
Reviews are the tiebreaker
Once a customer can find you, reviews decide whether they choose you. The vast majority of people read reviews before contacting a local business. Recent reviews build more trust than a wall of old ratings. A steady trickle of fresh reviews beats a stale pile every time. Recent reviews build consumer trust and improve a business's online viability, a metric you can track alongside other key performance indicators on our fixtures page.
How to check where you stand
The new Startups Business Toolkit includes a free online health check. It shows instantly how a business is showing up, where listings are accurate, and where they are missing. No sign-up is required.
From there, the toolkit's listings tool keeps details correct across 50-plus directories from a single dashboard. Updating a business once updates Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Facebook and others together. The platform also lets users track online viability across multiple platforms. New users can try the full listings tool with a one-month free trial that requires no credit card details. If the platform works, you can keep going. If not, you can walk away having paid nothing.
