Callosum Secures $100M Seed Round to Revolutionize AI Infrastructure
UK AI startup Callosum raises $100M in seed round to develop software infrastructure for AI workloads on different chips and models

Callosum, a UK-based AI startup, has successfully raised $100M in a seed round led by European VC Atomico, marking an exceptionally high-value European seed round. This significant investment is a testament to the company's innovative approach to AI infrastructure, which allows AI workloads to run on different chips and AI models.
Introduction to Callosum's Approach
Callosum's founders, who are Cambridge neuroscientists, propose a counterview to the prevailing "monoculture" that believes superintelligence will emerge from a single, powerful AI model running on identical chips. Instead, the company's approach focuses on creating a more flexible and adaptable AI infrastructure, enabling faster and cheaper solutions to complex, real-world problems at scale.
The company's approach has garnered support from notable figures, including the UK AI minister and the CEO of US chip company Cerebras. Callosum has announced a partnership with Cerebras, which will integrate Cerebras' technology into Callosum's platform, making ultra-low-latency inference available to customers.
Challenging the Status Quo
Callosum is challenging the assumption that AI development and greater intelligence will come through scaling a single AI model on identical chips. This process is not only energy-intensive and capital-costly but also concentrates power in the hands of a few major players, such as Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic. In contrast, Callosum's approach recognizes that real-world problems are heterogeneous and complex, requiring different capabilities to solve.
Partnership and Future Prospects
The partnership between Callosum and Cerebras is expected to enable customers to build AI systems that were previously impractical. As Andrew Feldman, CEO of Cerebras, noted, "By integrating Cerebras into Callosum's platform, we're making ultra-low-latency inference available exactly where it creates the greatest impact, enabling customers to build AI systems that simply weren't practical before." With this significant investment and strategic partnership, Callosum is well-positioned to revolutionize the AI infrastructure landscape.
The seed round, which also saw significant participation from European early-stage investor Plural, US VC DCVC, and the UK's Sovereign AI, along with angel investors, is a vote of confidence in Callosum's innovative approach. The company's ability to secure such a large investment in a seed round is a testament to the potential of its technology to disrupt the AI industry.
