Cummins, the large US industrial and power technology company, has joined Emerald Technology Ventures as a Limited Partner. The move aims to accelerate the engine maker's access to industrial innovation.

Partnering with Emerald provides Cummins with a new channel to expand its innovation pipeline. The focus is on engaging with emerging companies in areas like advanced mobility, electrification, alternative fuels, energy efficiency, and digital technologies.

Jeff Wiltrout, VP of Corporate Strategy at Cummins, stated the rationale. "Innovation has always been central to Cummins’ ability to help customers succeed through industry transitions," he said. "Our relationship with Emerald provides another channel to identify and evaluate technologies that could support our customers’ evolving needs and furthers our growth strategy."

The partnership is designed to move beyond mere financial investment. It will focus on practical collaboration, knowledge exchange, and measurable outcomes.

What Cummins Gains from the Partnership

Through Emerald's LP platform, Cummins will receive several key benefits. These include targeted startup access across specific sectors. The company will also get structured market insights and engagement.

Benefits include priority access to Emerald's investment teams and regular sector deep dives. Open innovation support is another component, featuring programs like Emerald Sprint. These enable rapid piloting and collaboration with selected startups. Finally, Cummins gains ecosystem connectivity, leveraging Emerald's global network of corporates, investors, and technology leaders.

Emerald's Focus and Scale

Emerald Technology Ventures is a substantial player in venture capital. Founded in 2000, it manages and advises assets of over €1.3 billion from offices in Zurich, Toronto, and Singapore.

The firm invests in startups tackling major challenges in climate change and sustainability. It runs four current funds and has executed hundreds of venture transactions. Emerald also manages six third-party investment mandates, including loan guarantees to over 100 startups.

Its investment activities span areas critical to Cummins's strategy. These include software-defined and connected vehicles, advanced powertrain technologies, and batteries. The focus also extends to clean energy solutions, energy efficiency, power management, and data centre innovations.

Strategic Alignment for the Energy Transition

The collaboration is squarely aimed at identifying practical, scalable technologies. These technologies must align with customer needs and strengthen Cummins's core businesses. Ultimately, they must support the company's commitment to lead the industry through the ongoing energy transition.

Christoph Frei, Partner and Head of Energy at Emerald, welcomed the new partner. "We are proud to welcome Cummins to the Emerald LP community," Frei said. He highlighted Cummins's "unique combination of industrial scale, technology leadership, engineering excellence, and long-term commitment to sustainability."

Frei outlined the partnership's goal: "Together, we aim to turn bold ideas into real-world solutions by connecting Cummins with the most relevant innovators in our global ecosystem." The partnership formalizes a bridge between established industrial scale and agile startup innovation.
