Apple's French startup buys under Cook
As Tim Cook steps down as Apple CEO, a look back reveals two key French startup acquisitions during his tenure: Regaind in 2017 for photo and Face ID tech

Tim Cook's fifteen-year tenure as Apple's CEO ended on September 1. Under his leadership, Apple's market capitalization grew from $345 billion to $4.75 trillion.
Apple celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. The company conducted numerous acquisitions under Cook to add technological capabilities or cool competition. The $3 billion purchase of headphone maker Beats in 2014 is the most famous. Two other deals involved French startups.
Regaind Acquisition in 2017
Apple acquired the French startup Regaind in 2017. Founded in 2015 by Arnaud Laurent and Guillaume Sequin, Regaind developed an API for analyzing photo content.
The startup's technology used artificial intelligence, computer vision, and deep learning algorithms. It helped developers and companies manage large volumes of photos. The API could analyze faces, classify images into semantic categories, and identify technical qualities like color and exposure. This allowed for rapid sorting.
Regaind's technology was useful for Apple. It aimed to improve the Photos app, specifically the Memories section. It also enhanced the Face ID facial recognition system. This period coincided with Apple's preparation to launch the iPhone X.
Datakalab Acquisition in 2023
In 2023, Apple purchased Datakalab, another French startup. Founded in 2016 by brothers Xavier and Lucas Fischer, Datakalab specialized in low-energy consumption algorithms. Its focus was AI compression and computer vision.
The company had previously developed technology to detect mask-wearing in public spaces. The acquisition gave Apple new, less energy-intensive AI capabilities. It also aimed to preserve user privacy.
Apple was reportedly behind in the AI race at the time. The company sought to run generative AI models and processing tools directly on its devices, starting with the iPhone. The goal was clear. Achieve this without causing overheating or draining the battery. That was a known weakness for the company's smartphones.
The AI Challenge for a New Leader
John Ternus, Cook's successor, now oversees this ongoing AI initiative. According to the source report, Ternus has a product-centric background. He contributed to the development of the iPad and AirPods. The report suggests he must accelerate this AI project compared to his predecessor.
Tim Cook was known for his sharp business sense and diplomacy. Under his watch, Apple became the first company to surpass a $3 trillion valuation on Wall Street in 2022. Nvidia has since taken the spotlight with a $5.25 trillion Nasdaq valuation. The two French startup acquisitions represent specific technological building blocks. They were added during a transformative financial era for the company.
