Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion Series D funding round, reaching a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. According to the company, this is the largest equity fundraise ever completed by a European technology firm.

The round was led by Samsung Electronics, with Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity acting as co-leads. New investors include Advent, funds managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A long list of existing backers also participated.

Founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, Mistral builds open-weight AI models. It positions itself as the primary alternative to closed AI systems, aiming to make frontier AI open, customizable, and cost-efficient for enterprises and governments.

The Shift to Sovereign AI

Mistral argues that the initial generative AI wave focused on building the most capable model. Now, organizations have shifted their focus to deployment for critical operations without ceding control of their infrastructure and intelligence to outside vendors. The company claims to be the only AI firm capable of answering that need by building the entire technology stack.

At the core of its offering is a sovereign AI layer based on a model of control across four dimensions. This means data remains within an organization's own boundaries, models can be customized and controlled, compute is private and predictable, and production systems stay fully auditable.

“Who controls intelligence, and who can adapt it to their own needs, matters as much as how powerful it is,” said Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral. He stated this philosophy is why the company was built on open-weight models and has expanded into infrastructure and deployment.

Funding and Growth Trajectory

This massive funding round arrives just three years after Mistral's launch. It follows a €1.7 billion Series C round led by ASML in September 2025 and a €722 million debt financing announced in March 2026 for a data centre near Paris.

The company currently operates in 20 countries and serves over 125 global enterprise customers, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. Its technology targets sectors like finance, manufacturing, defence, and energy.

Allocation of New Capital

Mistral says the new capital will significantly expand its frontier research efforts, which it describes as the foundation of its infrastructure, products, and sovereignty push. The funds are also earmarked for specific scaling initiatives.

The company's open, full-stack approach is designed to let enterprises adopt advanced AI without exposing sensitive data, workflows, or institutional knowledge to third parties. With the new €3 billion, Mistral plans to accelerate its commercial growth and international expansion.
